It’s easy-button-level seduction. Some internal IT teams and systems integrators are proposing AI solutions that were never designed for regulated workflows where auditability, traceability and human oversight are mandatory requirements. The distinction between AI for knowledge work and AI for regulated work is critical for life sciences. And it is why the industry needs a clear definition of Regulatory-Grade AI. A clear, fit-for-purpose definition of intent that respects copyright, that’s transparent, that doesn’t train vendors’ LLMs, and that doesn’t dangle the illusion of easy or accurate.
The emerging international consensus on AI for regulated work, reflected in guidances from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Canada’s Drug Agency (CDA-AMC), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Cochrane’s joint Position Statement on AI in Evidence Synthesis, and ISPOR’s ELEVATE, centers on four conditions: transparency in methodology, human oversight at critical decision points, traceability of AI-assisted outputs back to source, and reproducibility of methods under independent audit.
The Literature Review as a Regulatory Asset
Literature reviews are a foundational element in life sciences evidence generation.When AI enters this process, the stakes are not abstract. A missed citation in a safety review can put patient safety at risk. A hallucinated effect size in a meta-analysis can distort a cost-effectiveness model, and undocumented decisions can cause a regulatory submission to be denied.

Regulatory submissions require complete, defensible audit trails. This means every search, every citation, every screening decision, every data extraction, and every modification must be logged with version control and timestamps. When a notified body or health technology assessment committee questions methodology or outputs, the answer must already exist in the system.
Principle 04: Evidence Is the Customer’s, Not the LLM Vendors
Life sciences companies handle some of the most commercially sensitive data in any industry. The first wave of AI adoption in life sciences was measured in time saved, fewer hours of screening, faster first drafts, and reduced manual extraction burden. These gains are real. But they are not the ceiling.
